Salabat

Not too long ago, I was suffering from laryngitis thanks to a combination of a cold and allergies.  My cousin and friend in the area both wrote “SALABAT!” on my Facebook page.

Salabat is simply ginger tea and is a known “cure-all” in Filipino households.

While I did not have any fresh ginger in the house, I did (and do) have a tube of Gourmet Garden ginger.

I always have tubes of basil, lemon grass and ginger from Gourmet Garden.  While it’s not fresh, it’s a very suitable and easy substitute.

As I’ve never actually made salabat, a quick google search turned up several blogs including one of my favorite: Burnt Lumpia

Here is the simple recipe from Marvin at Burnt Lumpia:

Salabat Ginger Tea

Makes 2-3 servings

3 cups water
3 tablespoons brown sugar
5-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan over high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, then simmer for 10 minutes.

Soothes the throat and whatever ails you.
